After over 30 years as a research scientist, I finally have the opportunity to share my passion for photography.  I started taking pictures with a Minolta match-needle SLR in 1971. Some pictures from Yosemite, California, on that first roll have been carefully preserved and are included in this portfolio. 

My style is self-taught and spontaneous.  I tend to choose simple, uncluttered compositions that emphasize color, light and form.  

Some pictures are once-in-a-lifetime.  Some take deliberate advantage of special situations but are never staged or artificially embellished.  Some capture ordinary subjects in specific perspectives.

I like to have fun with subjects and titles.  So, you'll find a hint of humor sprinkled throughout the portfolio.

Except for recent digital photos, most of my prints are produced from the original 35mm negatives with only minor color corrections (if needed).   Although I appreciate the creative control often seen with digital photography, I think analog 35 mm photographs capture more realistically what the eye actually can see.

However, I recently have succumbed to trying digital, but keeping with my artistic philosophy, the prints are never color-enhanced to produce artificial effects or saturation.  I have added a new "Digital" page to the portfolio.

I grew up in Missouri,  attended college at Central Missouri State University and graduate school at the California Institute of Technology. I now live and work in the Russian River area of Sonoma County, California, north of San Francisco.  Many of the pictures in the Gallery pages were taken in California and Sonoma County.   I will be adding more local color photographs in the future.
